The 50 kilometre a day man has reached the 900 kilometre milestone.
As I wake up each winter morning greeted by the dark and cold my mind wanders to the dry heat of the Sahara and Jukka Viljanen, who at this moment is running another hot and sweaty 50 kilometres across the desert. Every single day Jukka wakes at the break of dawn, facing another sandstorm or day of unrelenting sun and heat and runs well over a marathon across the unforgiving sand.
With 18 days of these marathons behind him Jukka has an amazing 900 kilometres under his belt already. Overall the route across the desert will cover 2000 kilometres therefore Jukka still faces a fair few more days of running ahead of him.
Jukka’s SaharaChallenge is unmistakably an incredible and demanding challenge, an experience that most of us will not face in our life time. I have however wondered what could be my own mini Sahara Challenge? Maybe I should go running or swimming everyday for two months. Once I can get myself out of the door, ignoring the weather or how tired I feel, when I reach ‘the finish line’ I feel a real sense of pride and achievement in reaching my goal.
